Sony Sales 4.1 million PlayStation Units

Sony PlayStaion 3Sony’s entry into the gaming space movement is experiencing strong sales, the company announced today. Sony said it sold 4.1 million PlayStation Move units worldwide since the launch of the Comptroller in September.

In a statement announcing the sale, Sony said the figure “not only shows the successful launch of the new motion-sensitive controller, but also indicates a positive momentum going into the holiday season and 2011″

However, Sony confirmed to CNET in a separate e-mail today that the 4.1 million units were sold to retailers, and not to consumers. The company wouldn’t disclose how many units were actually sold to customers.

“While we don’t disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales,” a Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson told CNET.

Sony’s announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft saying that its own motion-gaming option has sold well–more than 2.5 million Kinect sensors since its launch earlier this month, according to Microsoft. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to CNET today that Microsoft’s figure is made up of sales to consumers, and not to retailers.

But in either case, both the Kinect and PlayStation Move have a long way to go to catch up to the motion-gaming leader, Nintendo. Last month, Nintendo reported that it has sold 65.3 million Wii Remotes to consumers in the United States alone since its console’s launch in November 2006. That figure includes units bundled with the Wii and Wii Play, as well as controllers purchased separately.

However, when it comes to unit sales, Microsoft’s Kinect is at a disadvantage. Both Sony and Nintendo require controllers for all players who want to enjoy their respective motion-gaming experience. More than one controller is needed for multiplayer experiences, meaning homes might have several Wii Remotes or Move controllers.

Play with the selection of moves by Microsoft, consumers simply buy a unit KINECTS single console to play alone or with others.

For non-gaming peripherals motion, Nintendo announced yesterday that it sold 1.5 million units of hardware – 900, 000 DS units and 600,000 Wii consoles – for consumers during the last week.

PlayStation Move shortages until Feb 2011 warns Sony

Sony has warned of a worldwide stock shortage of the PS3 controller Move a senior marketing VP Peter Dille, arguing deficit is likely to last Q1 2011. “We have catch-up problem in all three of the region, which lasts from January or February” the exec told Venture Beat, admitting that Sony misjudged possible demand

At the end of 2010, Sony Computer Entertainment is likely to sell 350,000 units of PlayStation in India. In the year 2009 Sony had sold 240,000 units. Now this year Sony wants 45 percent more sells than 2009.

“Since its launch in 2007, the gaming market in India has grown by leaps, and is still one of the largest untapped markets across the world. We anticipate this trend to consolidate, with increased entrenchment of the gaming culture in the Indian middle class,” said Atindriya Bose, country manager, Sony PlayStation.

Keeping this growth target in mind, Sony PlayStation today launched a gaming technique new to India – the motion controller. The ‘Move’ motion controller works on the principle of motion detection, allowing a higher degree of player involvement.

“Beside the motion sensing technology introduction, we would also launch a PlayStation Store in India, where customers will be able to buy games, especially those which are not as elaborate as the usual console games,” said Bose.

The console-based gaming market in India is pegged at Rs 450 crore, of which Sony, under its PlayStation segment, commands over 80 per cent.

Historical figures like Chandragupta Maurya will also figure in the games line-up in a strategy-focused game, called Battle Royal. In keeping with its habit of having locally-prejudiced games in the Indian PlayStation3 portfolio, the company would initiate street cricket and cart racing.
